Estimates, not guarantees
Every figure GravelGenie produces — cubic yards, tons, bags and cost — is an estimate calculated from the measurements you enter and typical material densities. It is intended to help you plan and budget, not to serve as an exact order quantity. Real gravel varies with stone size, shape and moisture, and no calculator can see your actual site. Always confirm final quantities with your supplier before ordering.
Why real amounts can differ
Several things can push the true quantity above or below our estimate, and it helps to know them:
- Density varies. We use conservative mid-range densities (published on our about page); your specific stone may be lighter or heavier, and wet gravel weighs more than dry.
- Ground is rarely flat. Slopes, dips and soft spots hold more material than a flat footprint suggests.
- Compaction. Gravel settles as it is laid and rolled, so loose and finished depths differ.
- Measurement error. An estimate is only as good as the dimensions you put in.
That is why the calculator adds a waste allowance by default and why we suggest rounding up when you are between amounts.
No professional advice
GravelGenie provides general information for planning purposes only. It is not engineering, construction, drainage or financial advice. For structural, load-bearing or drainage-critical work, consult a qualified professional who can assess your specific site.
Prices are illustrative
Any prices shown in our guides are typical ranges gathered for general guidance and change constantly by region, supplier and season. Use them to sanity-check a quote, not as a fixed price. Only your local supplier can give you a real, current number.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, GravelGenie is not liable for any loss or cost arising from reliance on its estimates — including over- or under-ordering, delivery decisions, or how material performs once installed. By using the site you accept that the final responsibility for quantities and purchases is yours.
